The Press loves to publicize the useful idiots

The term “Useful Idiot” has been attributed to Lenin (no, not John) but is more likely derived from von Mises’ reference to “useful innocents” in his 1947 book, “Planned Chaos.”  The context in which I use the term is more in line with von Mises.

Last week I received an email from a good friend.  It was the first I had heard of the “Wall Street Occupation.”  I read the piece and concluded, “anything this stupid is not going anywhere.”  How wrong I was.  What struck me as being absurd evidently was received more favorably by a lot of people.  I’m hoping it was a lot of people who just went along for the ride and wanted to be part of the mob.  Any who read the original goals of the group would have to know they are insane.  I can only conclude that either:

1.  We have a lot of insane people in our country; or

2.  Lots of folks are just dumb and go along with the crowd; or

3.  I am completely out of touch with their reality.

How can anyone in their right mind believe that their demands make any sense, let alone would result in anything positive?  For example, here are demands number three through seven from the list on their site (  http://occupywallst.org/forum/proposed-list-of-demands-for-occupy-wall-st-moveme/ ):

Demand three: Guaranteed living wage income regardless of employment.

Demand four: Free college education.

Demand five: Begin a fast track process to bring the fossil fuel economy to an end while at the same bringing the alternative energy economy up to energy demand.

Demand six: One trillion dollars in infrastructure (Water, Sewer, Rail, Roads and Bridges and Electrical Grid) spending now.

Demand seven: One trillion dollars in ecological restoration planting forests, reestablishing wetlands and the natural flow of river systems and decommissioning of all of America’s nuclear power plants.

Thomas Fuller must have known of this group when he said, “The mob has many heads, but no brains.”

Those who want to discredit others often use surrogates.  In this case, I think unions (who support the ‘movement’), moveon.org and other far left organizations have found their “useful idiots.”  I can’t imagine these protestors as anything else.
